Unforgettable evening with Natalie Cole

Sunday, March 8, Ate Ayie texted, “Zai, musta na? Ako haggard, paano naassign ako sa radio program ni Sen. Jinggoy, kaya ngarag ako ngaun. Gsto mo manood ng concert ni Natalie Cole? ”. To my delight, I ultimately replied, “Wow, libre? Sure. Ako ndi nmn busy, ok lang,”. And she said, “oo bah, basta sa bleachers lang, gsto ko lang mag-emote at marinig ang songs nia.

And there, all is set. March 11, Wednesday, around 8pm, we met at gateway! Yey! As we came up and entered the coliseum, I was a bit disappointed to see a not so huge crowd that she dragged at Araneta. But nonetheless, I was expecting to hear a number of doubtless all time favorite love songs that she’s popularized. At around 8:30pm, Natalie, the daughter of jazz and pop legend Nat King Cole, showed up to the thrilled and enthusiastic crowd waiting for her comeback performance after 25 years in Manila! She was welcomed with a warm round of applause from her excited fans and supporters. (Yeah, and we’re one of those fans, hihi!).

R and B/Urban contemporary and jazz-based pops were her genres. Well, the first few songs she sung were jazz sort, at least. And honestly, I didn’t know what she was singing. I’m not even familiar with those! Ha-ha! However, in every after song, almost all of the people in the crowd were clapping their hands to give appreciation for the music they’re playing. I thought, maybe, she’s just warming up; getting ready to sing her most applauded hits! Not later than I expected, she sung “Inseparable” that draw the crowd, that draw me and Ate Ayie into much excitement! Some were shouting, even us! Ha-ha! The reception from crowd, I think, made her more energized and thrilled. When she started singing, “Unforgettable”, people were driven with utmost happiness, because it brings back very good memories from the past. After she sung it, she uttered something like, You really are sentimental people. You like love songs, huh?” And the crowd answered her with applause. Then she said, I’ll be singing a couple of songs that I haven’t done in over 10 years, and I hope you’ll like it. I’m sure you will. After wards, she started singing while the crowd was shouting, …

"even though it’s been so long, my love for you keep going strong, I remember the things that we used to do, a kiss in the rain till the sun shine too, I try to deny it, but I’m still in love with you…I miss you like crazy…

Aw, such an over-romantic, love song! Then she sung, When I fall in love, Starting over again, Someone that I used to love, and I live for your love, above all.

I and ate Ayie were already satisfied hearing all those songs that we knew, and all of the songs she sung after our favorites were bonus for us! She’s an awesome performer! She has a calm, cold voice that’s so refreshing, so relaxing! She has this tone, which came across as round and full-bodied even in the lower register. Despite her age, she carried all her songs splendid, and all were professionally executed! As a music lover my self, I was ecstatic to watch such a talented and a legend in her generation. I feel lucky and honored to have the opportunity to watch her doing her thing! Thank you so much ate Ayie for the treat! I was surprised to let know that it was a treat for my upcoming birthday. Thanks for the delicious food and catching-up moments @ Cafebola, wherein you don’t mind turning from a fine lady into a jologs when you saw Kuya germs and asked to take picture of you and him together, ha-ha!

The concert was titled An Unforgettable Evening with Natalie Cole. And indeed, it was an unforgettable night for us!
