23rd Birthday Celebration

I have separated this entry on my previous birthday blog because I felt that it deserves a separate space for me to tell the whole story with what adventure I had on my birthday itself. I have experienced a different kind of awe, surprise and excitement! Thanks to my boyfriend and the people we’ve encountered during this adventure.

March 21, my birthday. I have received oodles of texts from friends, family and some orgmates greeting me a happy birthday. My parents called me up and greet me, and told me that they’ll be cooking some food to celebrate my birthday even without my presence. Ha-ha! Thanks to you all!

I thought it would be another usual day for me, except of course that it was the day when I was born. But even so, I wasn’t expecting too much of a surprise. Though I know that Ian had planned something for me. He told me to prepare after lunch. Then came 12nn, I was actually surprised again to see him carrying a deliciously designed cake with bouquet of flowers on top! It was my third cake. He was also carrying a video camera to document what we are going to do. Hmmm, and so I as thinking, where are we heading? He asked me to bring a jacket for I am just wearing a sleeveless pink blouse with bolero on top, and he said that it’s going to be cold in where we are going. So I initially thought, Tagaytay? But I was wrong! We start off going to Mall of Asia. There he said that we are going to try ice-skating! Sounds cool huh? Yes, literally it’s cool – or cold? It was our first time to attempt skating on the ice.

At first I was hesitant for when I was looking at a cluster of individuals skating on the rink, I have noticed some who already knew how to skate, and perhaps some were newbie’s like us, if in case. Then he hold my hands and said, ‘let’s go, it’ll be fun you’ll see’. I instantly followed him as we head on the entrance of the skating rink. We excitedly gather and wear our skates (it should at least as small as you shoe size, and should be laced all the way up and tightly), move along and get our head covering or helmet, and we step on the ice skating rink for the first time. It’s obviously slippery, icy and smooth. We were like babies learning how to walk the first time. Fortunately, we were not the first timers alone holding on to the walls trying to balance ourselves as we glide our skates then push with one foot and then the other.

It’s cold and freezing inside, plus I have a crazy cold trying to impede the delight of ice-skating out of me. But I don’t mind! Ha-ha! After several hours of trying and patiently learning how to skate, we did it! We can glide on our own, without holding on the walls! Thanks to a kind lady who held my hand while I was on the side of the walls struggling to skate. She told me to trust her and that she will guide me to learn the basics – for free! I have just thought, does this lady have any idea that it was my birthday? She was a gift from God! When she dragged me along the middle of the rink, my worries had left me. I felt confidence in myself that I can do it. And when she put down my hands, I felt no fear in gliding! Ah, thanks to her!

Obviously then, we can skate around the rink better than first timers. We even took a video of ourselves skating. As we were enjoyably skating, I thought I wouldn’t fall. But no! As many others have experienced, I fell. With a big ouch! It was embarrassing at first, but realizing that every body that tried skating had fallen, or most likely, each of them might have fallen many times as much as I did, ease the discomfort I felt when I fell. It’s normal to fall, according to the lady I met, my mentor?hehe. So if in case you want to try ice-skating, prepare yourself to fall, at least once. It hurts, especially on hands when I fell backwards. But it hurts more when you fall forward, right Ian? Haha, I’m not expecting him to fall, but he did, with a big blaag! But that’s nothing! What’s important is that we enjoyed skating on the ice. And for my most favorite part: holding each others hand while skating. Aww, what a lovely feeling!

Hours have passed and it’s finally 7pm. We get off the rink and started walking out of the mall to ride a cab that will head us to Harbor View. Unfortunately, we can’t ride a taxi, because according to the drivers, there’s a heavy traffic along Roxas Boulevard. And so we took the next available option: ride a mini cab, and then walk. We both don’t have any idea where and how far Harbor View is, and my boyfriend seem to have a reservation there without knowing where exactly it is located. Ha-ha! (Trying different new! Yeah, that’s the idea, he-he). We have passed the star city already and we were tired of walking along Roxas Boulevard. Then we were trying to catch a taxi for us to take into the restaurant. Yet, we are unlucky! But as the saying goes, when someone closes the door, someone opens the window! We were unsuccessful to ride on a taxi, but we are doubly blessed to ride on a carriage drawn by a horse! Yeah, we felt like celebrities riding along with that white horse along Roxas Boulevard! What a relief! What a ride! Hahaha!

Finally we were at the Harbor View. I was amused by the place. It protrudes out over the harbour (Manila Bay) that makes it one of the most romantic spots in Manila. Believe me, it’s appealing and endearing. We have ordered again, of course seafood, their mouth-watering specialty! For the main dish we had nilasing na hipon, baby squid topped with mushroom, tahong soup and mixed seafood rice. Our appetizer was their freshly made Harbor salad! Umm, yumm! For dessert, we had banana - pandan crepe and buko with ube ice cream inside. Ahh, what a diner! Yet, my boyfriend still had done more than enough to surprise me. He had given me another gift, a pair of earrings similar to what he gave me on our 4th monthsary, which I apparently lost when we do cart racing at enchanted kingdom last March 15. He knew I was sorry and I was terribly sad when I lost it, and he replaced it with another but still the same design! I cried for I was extremely pleased and happy, and I can’t bear the happiness I’m feeling at that moment. Thanks so much Ian, for your engaging love for me. I love you!

It was an experience worth remembering. Not only because it was my birthday but also because all that we’ve tried that day was new! Whew! What an incredibly overwhelming 23rd year celebration for me!
